High School Football Saturday Morning Rewind:Busy ‘First Friday’ and the crowd for NWG at Smith on Monday should be large

*****From the area, we are finding that this might be the top performance from Friday night….
Glenn’s Stephon Brown was the ‘Friday Night Standout’: 25 of 37, 314 yds passing, six TDs (two rushing, four passing) against three INTs….Glenn wins over Ledford, 47-24 and info coming in from Michael Lindsay on Twitter at the High Point Enterprise…*****

We are re-winding last night’s games and from what see the three top teams in the county did well on different fronts….

Dudley rolled over WS Carver, Eastern Guilford did the same thing to Northeast Guilford and Page had a real battle on their hands over at Davie County, but the Pirates prevailed in OT….

49-0 for Dudley and no surprise with Panthers pulling some of their key starters before halftime….44-0 for Eastern Guilford over Northeast and this final to be honest with you, shocked me….I thought this old “backyard battle” would be close and played to the vest, but EG ran away with this one and it makes you wonder if the EG Wildcats are going be this good, or if the NEG Rams are just not going to as competitive as we thought they would…Tons of respect for NEG coach Earl Bates and I would not want to be in that Ram practice come Monday…For Dudley as their final score indicates, the defense was the key/king and for Coach Steven Davis, I don’t think his offense is ever really a major concern, he knows if his defense shows up and does what it is supposed do, Dudley is going to be successful and the Panthers will win…..”Dudley D” has been the key, forever….DJ Crossen, Myles Berry, Zariek Rush all doing their thing on Friday night….Dudley at Ragsdale next Friday night….

As much as anything the Thursday and Friday night games for Northern Guilford are eye-opening…..NG tops Grimsley 49-48 on Thursday and the Nighthawks come back and steal one over at Grimsley on Friday night, coming away with that 16-15 victory….Again this might be another case of Grimsley might not be quite as far along as we thought they were, and Northern may be much better than we imagined….NG can use this to propel them over to Page next Friday night, with a legitimate chance to make a strong showing, vs. the Pirates….

Sounds like the Page defense is firing on all cylinders, after the Pirate defense gave up those 14 early points, they pitched a shutout the rest of the way over in Mocksville in front of a rabid Davie County War Eagle crowd….Page will have that home crowd at Marion Kirby Stadium backing them up next Friday and although on Friday night, we did not see any real superstars emerging, top players made plays that they had to make, to win these games…Page lead by new QB Paige, receiver Nick Baker, DB Alex Angus and kicker Thomas Murray, plus if Paige was having a good night for Page at QB, it tells me Nick Mackovic was doing his usual good job of snapping for the Pirates…..Paige 10-20 for 90 yards for Page….

I still feel we have it right ranking Dudley, Page and Eastern Guilford in the Top Three and from there Northwest Guilford has a chance to make statement on Monday night over at Smith, with the Vikings looking to lay their claim on top-tier status in Guilford County….That crowd should be very large and I will take a step back from saying huge, but look at it….If you are a coach or player and you face either NWG or Smith this season, you get a “Free Scouting Night”…Get to go see them on a Monday and you don’t have to burn a Friday night….I still remember that Northwest Guilford vs. Edgewood game I saw back in my playing days on a Monday night, over at Northwest Guilford and it made for a good evening of research and back in the day we used to never lose to NWG, back when I was down/out on the farm and I don’t mean the Sandy Ridge Prison farm, I was talking about the old Oak Ridge Road farm….

Be over there on Monday night and let’s see if we have a battle with the Vikings and the Golden Eagles and it will be interesting to see how much energy Smith brings to table on Monday night in their renovated/refurbished Claude Manzi Stadium…

If you were to say we are just rambling in here this morning, you might be correct, but we are laying the ground work for this 2017 season and we do it every Saturday morning, with our High School Football Saturday Morning Rewind….

More to come in a moment….We have to get some names and numbers up here, but are tracking sources are a changing and we are going to have to change too….

Now with our tracking backing us up we see by way of J.P. Mundy that Dominique Graves and Nic Cheeley spearheaded the Eastern Guilford offense on Friday night and not sure what time that game ended, but sounds like they were finishing up at around 11:30 or going on midnight….Graves has top-tier status as a QB in Guilford County and might be the top man right now after one week under our belts, with the SWG Cowboys Jaren Rainey out on suspension….Cheeley carries a first flight receivers card, so he is in the upper echelon as well….Two touchdowns with Graves and Cheeley hooking up on Friday night….Graves went 13-19 for 147 yards and 2 TD passes and his prime target for the TD’s was Cheeley….

Learning more about Grimsley and Northern Guilford from our N&R read with Joe Sirera, we see that Grimsley coughed the ball up numerous times and DB Christian Herbin, from NG intercepted Grimsley QB Jaylen Smith, three times…INT’s, fumbles, and bad snaps, Grimsley coach Darryl Brown was not too happy about the way the Grimsley ball was bouncing on Friday night, but NG coach Eric Westberg was very pleased by the way his backup QB Jakob Lenard responded to the uphill challenge facing the Nighthawks in the second half….I think I read on that game report from Joe that Grimsley led at one stage/point of that game 15-3 and then NG goes on to win it, 16-15 and that can make your BP/blood pressure go up if you are in that Grimsley camp….Grimsley numbers show Born Lesane with 23 carries for 166 yards and JJ Julian had three receptions for 114 yards for NG and one of his catches went 62 yards for a TD…

We are picking up Chad Stephens with 95 yards rushing to pace Southeast Guilford over HP Andrews and the Falcons are off to a solid start under new head coach Kennedy Tinsley…..Ryan Douglas(SEG) with at least one TD and that being of the running version…..

Still looking for some info we can pull on Ragsdale, SWG, HP Central, WG and a few others……
Edrick Purnell for Western Guilford with two TD passes and one TD run….WG had the game on ice in the second before Morehead rallied to win over WG….Purnell capitalized, throwing a 15 yard touchdown pass to Jelani Dye to increase the Hornet lead to 19-6 with 5:18 to go in the third quarter.

  1. Must say Big Andy D, there were many exciting, close games this past weekend and this could be a season of feel good stories. And please get an editor. You have a published author now , although it seems like anyone cab get published. See you next.

  2. Witnessed the Eastern/ NE game and although Eastern is much better than NE at this time, those NE kids fought to the finish and will hit you on Defense, with a coach like Bates leading the way I bet by season’s end you will hear a little noise from that NE squad.
