Football Drops Season Opener To Apprentice
from Wes Gullett, Greensboro College Sports Information Director

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Greensboro College football team fell to the Builders of Newport News Apprentice to open the 2017 season Saturday, 39-7.

The Builders (0-1) took a 25-0 lead into halftime before extending their lead to 32-0 early in the third quarter.

After getting the ball back following the touchdown, Greensboro was unable to get anything going on the offensive side of the ball and was forced to punt the ball away with just over 11 minutes showing on the clock.

The Pride defense was then able to step up big as Quinton Maxbauer halted the Apprentice drive with an interception deep in his own territory and returned it 43 yards to the Builder 37-yard line.

However, Greensboro was not able to take advantage of the opportunity and turned the ball back over on downs.

After Apprentice extended their lead to 39-0 late in the fourth quarter, Greensboro tallied their lone score of the afternoon when Chastin Robinson connected with Ryan Wahal for a 66-yard touchdown.

“We played sloppy in all three phases of the game today,” Head Coach Greg Crum said. “We turned the ball over three times on special teams and that really hurt.

“I give credit to the kids at Apprentice as they did a great job executing their game plan but our guys just did not come ready to play. We will continue to work hard and get ready for Gallaudet next week.”

Kasseem Bagley had a team-high 10 tackles, while Josh Cross finished with seven.

The Pride will return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they travel to take on the Bison of Gallaudet University. For more information on Greensboro College football, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.

  1. Nick Johnson (SWGHS ’17) is a freshman at The Apprentice School. He plays special teams and offensive line for the Builders. He got to play most of the 4th quarter against Greensboro Saturday. Great Kid local talent!
