LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore Grant Powell won co-medalist honors at the Transylvania Fall Invitational Sunday as the Greensboro College men’s golf team turned in a second-place performance.

Powell, who carded a 2-under-par on Saturday’s first round, fired a team best 4-under-par 68, Sunday to finish the 36-hole event at six-under par.

“It was great to start out the new season with a new beginning under Coach Cantamessa,” Powell said. “I came into this weekend believing I could defend my individual title here, and I was able to do that.

“Despite me having some rough holes this weekend, Coach (Cantamessa) helped keep me calm and composed. This win is just an awesome way to start my sophomore season.”

Levi Grogan carded a 1-under-par on Sunday to finish the event in a fifth-place tie, three strokes behind his Pride teammate.

Luke Grogan finished the tournament with an even-par 144, after shooting back-to-back even par rounds of 72.

Scott Campbell and Austin Coble also competed for the Pride, while Jacob Neal participated as an individual and fished at 7-over-par.

“We made a big push today but Guilford was just too solid this weekend,” Head Coach Jim Cantamessa said. “Grant played great in both rounds, but we had a couple rough holes as a team.

“This was a great way to start the new season for us as we were able to defeat the defending National Champions in Wittenberg.”

Guilford College took home the team title, while Ohio Wesleyan finished in third-place.

The Pride men will return to action Sept. 24 when they open play at the 2017 NCAA Division III National Championship Preview. The tournament will be played at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C., home of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship Tournament in May.
