Learn to Decelerate to develop Explosive Jumping:
from Coach Jimmy Lamour with Performance Training Systems

We found that young athletes do well when they start with a low impact jump we call landing jumps. They can be adjusted by height as the athletes become more explosive and no equipment is necessary. Next, once the form is mastered we move on to small side hops for speed. Thirdly, we start including single leg hops, broad jumps, double jumps, etc… The main idea is to make sure that we don’t rush the process and try to speed up the progress before the athlete is ready. It takes time for athletes to teach their minds to connect with their muscles to produce force. Also, sometimes it takes the ligaments and connective tissues longer than the muscles to adapt. It is wise to sometimes stop the jumps in a program for a brief period to allow the body to make the adaptations from the weeks of training. Remember, the gains are made during recovery periods not when you are training.
