GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College volleyball team topped the Panthers of Ferrum College to open USA South Athletic Conference play Wednesday, 3-0.

Greensboro opened Set 1 with two straight points before the Panthers were able to take the lead at 4-3.

Ferrum then held on to their narrow advantage before Greensboro responded with a 8-2 run to pull ahead 15-12. Emily Horn, who finished with a match-high 11 kills, got the run started for the Pride before closing it out with two straight service aces.

However, the Panthers were able to battle back to take a 22-20 lead but Greensboro closed out the set on a 5-1 run to win the set 25-23, taking a 1-0 lead in the match. Following a Panthers error, Horn tallied two more aces to spark the spurt for Greensboro before Shayla Moss capped off the set victory with her third kill of the match.

After Greensboro took Set 1, Ferrum was able to establish a 12-9 lead midway through Set 2.

This time it was Greensboro fighting from behind but the Pride did not let that slow them down.

The Pride used a 6-1 run to regain the lead at 15-14. Aces continued to be the story for the Pride runs as Horn tallied yet another ace, while Katie Clark and Danyale Berry recorded one kill each during the streak.

Greensboro was then able to maintain their advantage for the remainder of the set before Ferrum came charging back with a 4-0 run late to take a 25-24 lead.

However, Greensboro used three Panthers errors to win the set 27-25 to extend their lead to 2-0.

The Pride was then able to ride the momentum from the exciting finish to Set 2 to surge fast out of the gates in Set 3.

After trading points early in the set, Greensboro went on a 11-4 run to take a 13-8 lead.

After establishing the five-point lead, Greensboro did not look back as they secured the straight-set victory after closing out the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-18. Moss fueled the closing run with two kills, while Horn added one kill.

“This was not our best performance of the season,” Head Coach Kathy Bullock said. “Our performance tonight was very uncharacteristic of the way that we have been playing this season.

“I think the girls may have thought that we were good enough to overlook a team like Ferrum, which we had beaten earlier this season in straight sets, but this proved to be a reality check for them. We will continue to practice hard to get better and get ready for two more conference matches this weekend.”

Moss also finished with 11 kills on the day, while Berry tallied 10 kills after recording a .500 hitting percentage. Clark had a match-high 20 assists and Tori Belcher paced the Greensboro defense with 16 digs.

The Pride will return to action Saturday when they travel to Meredith College for two matches. Greensboro will square off with Pfeiffer University at 12 p.m. before taking on the host Angels at 4 p.m.
