GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College women’s lacrosse, men’s swimming, women’s swimming, wrestling and softball teams were among those taking part in the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Saturday, Sept. 16, in downtown Greensboro.

They and other participants climbed 72 flights of stairs, representing the highest floor the New York Fire Department firefighters reached after two hijacked airliners crashed into the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2011.

Each member of the teams wore a tag with a picture of a fallen hero, along with his/her name and department. Three hundred forty-three firefighters and 72 police officers lost their lives on that day.

“Our ladies reflected on and remembered all of the first responders that sacrificed their lives responding to the 9/11 attacks,” Head Softball Coach Teresa Fister said. “We will never forget those who lost their lives that day.

“It was amazing to see the outpouring of support from our local community for those who serve and protect us every day here in Greensboro. We are so thankful for their sacrifices and commitment to keeping our community safe.”

This marks the third consecutive year the Pride women’s lacrosse and softball teams took part in the 72-flight climb and the second for the Greensboro men’s and women’s swimming teams. It was the first time for the wrestling team, and the event provided a positive impact of remembrance for the team.

“What a great event,” Head Wrestling Coach Erik Wince said. “I was extremely impressed with the support it receives.
“It is great to see the Greensboro College athletics community come together to show our support to those who sacrificed so much on that history-changing day in 2001. We will definitely make this an annual event for our program!”
