High Point Women’s Golf Finishes Sixth at Starmount Forest Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The High Point University women’s golf team finished the Starmount Forest Fall Classic in sixth Tuesday (Oct. 3) at the Starmount Country Club (Par 72 – 6,186 yards) in Greensboro.

The Panthers finished the event with a 308 on Tuesday to place sixth with a 924.

Sophomore Tonrak Tasaso shot a 2-over 74 in the final round to lead the Panthers, finishing in a tie for 17th at 228. Fellow sophomore Samantha Vodry placed in a tie for 11th after a 3-over 75 in the third round.

Senior Cayla Smith earned the Panthers’ first eagle of the season on the par-5 14th and finished in 33rd at 236 after a final-round 79. Sophomore Anna-Marie Kuenzle and freshman Anna Holmberg both placed in a tie for 38th with three-day totals of 239.

Playing as individuals, freshman Caitie Gelhausen finished 43rd at 241, while junior Devi Meyers (267) and freshman Vasy Montague (270) placed 61st and 63rd, respectively.

“Overall, our result this week was very average against the high expectations we have set for ourselves,” HPU head coach Alexis Bennett said. “What impresses me most though, is the maturity level of this group and the way they handle adversity with such level heads. We made far too many high numbers to really compete this week, but at the same time, we bounced back incredibly well after each misstep.

“There were plenty of positives to take away from this week that will serve us well as we prepare for a hectic three-event stretch in 10 days to cap off the fall season.”

Next up, HPU will be in action at the Ridges Golf Club in Hayesville, N.C., for the Bill Berg Invitational Oct. 16-17.
