RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore Brendan MacDougall continued his consistent play leading the High Point University men’s golf team with a top-10 finish in the Wolfpack Invitational on Tuesday.

MacDougall led the field of 80 golfers in par-3 scoring shooting a 71 on Tuesday after posting match 71s on Monday (71-71-71, 213). The sophomore’s -3 finish marked his second under-par tournament of his career and gave him his fourth top-10 finish in 13 career events.

“Obviously this wasn’t the finish we were looking for to start the season, but it exposed our weaknesses and where we need to improve,” head coach Brady Gregor said. “We definitely identified those and will address those things moving forward. We only have a week or so off so we are excited to get into competition after that.”

The Calgary, Alberta product has posted three of his 11 career sub-par rounds in the first three rounds of the 2017-18 season. Overall, High Point used 300 strokes to traverse the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on Tuesday – the best round of the two days for the team. Despite finishing 12th in the field, HPU’s 300 was the ninth-best round of the day (302-305-300, 907).

“The main positive from this tournament was Brendan’s play,” Gregor continued. “He did everything you can ask of your number one golfer. He shot three under-par rounds at a championship level course and finished in the top-10 by beating a lot of nationally ranked players in doing so. If he can continue that, then he’s going to be right where he wants to be come regionals. Now we just need four other guys to step up and go with him and I have confidence that we will do that.”

Leading the improvement on the second day of the fall, sophomores RJ Bartolomucci and Alec Weary both carded their best rounds of the event. Bartolomucci fired a +3 (75) – two strokes better than his first and second rounds. Meanwhile, Weary recorded a +4 (76) to finish tied for 58th (77-77-76, 230), two spots behind Bartolomucci (77-77-75, 229).

Rounding out the scoring, senior Emile Menard posted a +6 (78) and placed in a tie for 65th in the tournament (77-80-78, 235). Freshman Ethan Willis wrapped up his first collegiate tournament with an 82.

Playing as an individual, sophomore Justin Lenzini shot a 79 and finished tied for 68th (79-78-79, 236).

NC State, the event’s host, claimed the title shooting a three-round total of 848.

High Point has next week off before heading to Burlington, N.C. for the Phoenix Intercollegiate at the Alamance Country Club on Oct. 16-17.
