LEXINGTON, Va. – Freshman Josh Breece ran for a career-high 223 yards and four touchdowns in Washington and Lee University’s 47-26 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football win over visiting Guilford College Saturday.
Breece led the Generals’ (4-2, 1-1 ODAC) high-powered option attack, which generated 526 rushing yards and seven scores. He ran for a touchdown in every quarter, including scores on consecutive second-half possessions that opened a 34-19 Generals’ lead with 12:19 remaining.
After Breece’s final touchdown, Guilford’s De’Eric Bell returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for his second kickoff return touchdown of the year. Harrison Kiser’s point after made it a 34-26 game, but the Quakers drew no closer.
Reserve quarterbacks Drew Richardson & Trey Laughlin filled in admirably for injured starter Matt Sgro and combined for 171 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Laughlin, a freshman, scored on a 47-yard keeper in the second quarter and Richardson’s four-yard run capped the game’s scoring. The Generals’ Collin Sherman had 102 rushing yards on 10 carries. Washington and Lee’s McKenna Johnston added 38 rushing yards and scored on a five-yard, fourth-quarter run on the series following Bell’s kickoff return.
Guilford senior quarterback Karsten Miller threw two touchdowns and ran for another in the first half, which helped the Quakers to within 21-19 at halftime. He connected with Tyriek Russell from 28 yards in the first quarter and found Rontavius Miller for a 33-yard score late in the second quarter. In between, he scored on a 44-yard run. Miller finished the game with 273 passing yards and two scores on 29 completions. He threw one interception and was sacked four times. Russell was his favorite target and finished with eight grabs for 119 yards, both game highs.
Washington and Lee’s Max Garrett made 12 stops, 10 in the first half, Grey Reames added eight tackles and picked off Miller in the Generals’ end zone to end a Quakers’ scoring chance in the third quarter. Andrew Frailer had two of Washington and Lee’s four sacks among his four tackles.
Vic Smith, Jr.’s 12 tackles paced the Quakers. Teammates Jordan Cuthbertson and Reggie Williams recorded 11 and 10 stops, respectively.
