HPU Women’s Golf in Fourth Place at Bill Berg Invitational

HAYESVILLE, N.C.—The High Point University women’s golf team sits in fourth place after the first day of the Bill Berg Invitational Monday (Oct. 16) at the Ridges Country Club (Par 62 – 6,057 yards) in Hayesville.

On a cool day with an increasingly quicker course as the day went on, HPU is in fourth place with a two-round score of 619, behind Richmond (611), Samford (612) and Wofford (617), but ahead of 11 schools, including Eastern Kentucky (622), Winthrop (623) and Presbyterian (625).

“I’m incredibly happy with the way the girls fought to stay in it today,” HPU head coach Alexis Bennett said. “A couple of holes bit us, but overall we executed much better than we have been. We made a lot of birdies which was a lot of fun to see and set us up for an exciting finish tomorrow. If we play to our potential, we’re within reach.”

Freshman Anna Holmberg led the Panthers with a 2-over 74 and a 5-over 77 to sit in a tie for eighth place at 151. Sophomores Tonrak Tasaso and Samantha Vodry are tied for 20th at 156. Tasaso had rounds of 5-over and 7-over, while Vodry posted a 2-over 74 after shooting 82 in the first round.

Senior Cayla Smith is in a tie for 33rd at 157 after posting rounds of 78 and 79. Sophomore Anna-Marie Kuenzle improved 15 strokes from the first round to the second, shooting a 6-over 78 in the second.

The third and final round begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 17) with a shotgun start.
