Greensboro, N.C.- Anna Rae Porcelli blasted her seventh goal of the season to the top right corner of the goal to lift the Pride over the Monarchs of Methodist University Wednesday, in double overtime, 3-2.

In the 35th minute of the contest, Greensboro pushed into the Monarchs territory where Mercedes Fisher took control over the ball.

Fisher then found Meredith Priest who then launched into the top center of the goal to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.

As the second half commenced, the Pride looked to extend their lead. In the 49th minute.

Samantha Whipp took a corner kick and set up Angela Niles for a successful header that flew over the goalie’s head.

Greensboro’s lead was then cut in half when the Monarchs pushed down the field and scored a goal in the 69th minute.

The Pride fought hard to hold onto the lead, but with less than four minutes remaining the Monarchs forced the game into overtime.

Both teams struggled to score a goal in the first extra period, which resulted in a second overtime period.

With the game still tied at 2-2 in double overtime, Greensboro began to communicate to each other as they pushed the ball back into Monarchs territory.

Fisher sprinted down the field to help the Pride hold possession over the ball and found Porcelli just outside the 18-yard box.

Porcelli then scored the game-winning goal.

The victory over the Monarchs marks their 15th win of the season, breaking the 2007 women’s soccer team record of most wins in a single season.

“Not bad for a team that was predicted to finish seventh out of the playoffs,” Head Coach Gus Mota said after the game. “Today was a big win for our girls. They worked hard for over 90 minutes. We gave up a couple of goals on miscommunication, but we rallied back in overtime to secure a 4-2 conference record so far.

“We’re excited about breaking and now holding the record for most wins in a single season for Greensboro College. Now it’s time to review film and get back to work tomorrow because now our focus is on the game against Averett on Saturday.”

The Pride women return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Averett University. For more information on Greensboro College women’s soccer, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
