GREENSBORO, N.C.– The Greensboro College men’s soccer team stunned the Scots of Covenant College in double overtime Friday, 3-2.

Covenant struck early in the first half when the Scots’ midfielder placed the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal in the 6th minute.

The Pride did not wait long to answer back.

Seven minutes later, Carlos Barragan was set up for a penalty kick and booted it right over the goalie’s fingertips to tie the game at one goal apiece.

As time dwindled down in the first half, Greensboro struggled to capitalize on their opportunities and went into the halftime break tied at one.

The tie then held until the beginning of the second half when Covenant recorded a header off a free kick to put the Scots on top, 2-1.

With the Pride now facing the time clock, Greensboro continued to apply pressure on the Covenant defense but was unable to find the equalizer until Gerardo Perazza took a feed from Barragan and slotted it in the upper right hand corner of the goal.

Following Perazza’s goal, time expired with the game tied at two, forcing the game into overtime.

The two teams then played the first 10 minutes of overtime to a scoreless draw, but Jacob Owens lifted Greensboro to the one-goal victory with his second goal of the season just two-minutes into the second overtime.

“I think we came out a little too lethargic today which is disappointing as we still have a lot to play for,” Head Coach Tony Falvino said. “As a group we allowed Covenant to find a way into the game and they are a hard team to play against as they go hard all the time. We had some players really step up today and lead by example.

“We did not capitalize on some really good opportunities but the guys showed a lot of character to battle back from behind in win in double overtime. We have to rest and re-hydrate properly tonight as we have another tough opponent in Maryville tomorrow.”

Greensboro outshot the Scots 20-4, while also holding a 3-1 corner kick advantage. Kalen Kohut recorded one save and was credited with the win.

The Pride men will return to action Saturday when they host the Scots of Maryville College at 4 p.m. For more information on Greensboro College men’s soccer continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
