Team Effort Propels Southeast Guilford Past Southern Guilford 34-21 – Wyatt Smith Reporting

Ryan Douglas accounted for three Southeast Guilford touchdowns and the Falcon defense held strong as the Falcons beat the Southern Guilford Storm 34-21 at C.K.  Siler Stadium on Friday night.

Neither team scored in the first quarter. The Falcons had the only scoring chance with first-and-goal on the Storm nine yard line, but Southern’s Patrick Clegg intercepted Ryan Douglas, ending the threat.

Southeast began a scoring frenzy in the second quarter on a 16-yard touchdown reception by Brent Apple. Five minutes later, Keshawn Baldwin intercepted the Storm’s Myles Crisp and returned it for another Falcon score. Anthony Badgett ran back a punt two minutes after the pick-six, making the score 20-0. The Falcons’ attempt at a two-point conversion failed. The final touchdown of the second quarter by the Falcons was a six yard run by Ryan Douglas to make the score 27-0 going into halftime.

Southeast scored for the final time with 2:47 to play in the third quarter, a five-yard scamper by Douglas, making the score 34-0.

Following the touchdown, Southern Guilford showed resiliency and began a comeback. They started the ensuing drive inside Falcon territory for the first time in the game and just three plays later were in the end zone. Crisp ran 21 yards for the touchdown.

The fourth quarter featured more Storm scores, in large part due to the efforts of senior WR Matthew Hedrick, who caught touchdown passes for 71 and 20 yards in the quarter.

Eventually, however, the comeback wasn’t quite enough and Southeast prevailed by the final score of 34-21.

“We were coming off a tough loss and came in wanting to be very intense, and I think we did a good job of that,” Southeast quarterback Ryan Douglas said.

Falcon head coach Kennedy Tinsley was pleased with some parts of the game and hopes to see improvement in others.

“I thought we did another great job defensively,” Tinsley said.

“I didn’t think we played too well offensively. They blitzed us and got after us; that put us in a bind. We played off of our defense and they pulled us through tonight.

“If it weren’t for special teams and the pick-six, this game would’ve been a lot tighter. We never got going offensively and that is disappointing. We’ve got some things to fix.

“I thought (Douglas) was solid,” Tinsley said of his quarterback. “He’s got a great arm, is very talented, but we’re working on knocking down the turnovers.”

Coming into tonight’s game Southern Guilford had won its last three games, all conference matchups.

Storm head coach Bear Bradley spoke about the need to find a way to get back in the win column next week.

“Tough loss tonight,” Bradley said. “Like I said, we have to bounce back. There is still a shot at playoffs; we just have to take care of business next week, and it will be a challenge again.”

Bradley praised the efforts of his defense in the game.

“I do feel like our defense is still leading us,” he said.

“Like tonight, I feel like the defense played probably one of the best games they could play. We had an interception that was returned for a touchdown and gave up the special teams touchdown. We couldn’t ever flip the field position for them offensively. But I think that our defense played outstanding tonight.”

Bradley will take the positives and bring them with him when he sees his team again at practice.

“I think we have to come reset on Monday,” he said. “This game is behind us, and right now we are tied for second place in the conference. To solidify a second place finish, we have to play well against Southern Alamance who moves the ball well and is well coached. Right now our biggest thing is that we need to refocus and come in knowing what we need to do.”

Unfortunately for the Storm, two of their starters were ejected from the game, and therefore will miss the remaining two regular season games, according to NCHSAA rules.

“They are very strong players and bring a lot to the team,” Bradley said of the players who were ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“I think Jamiah McMillan did a good job coming in after the ejections and running the ball tonight. Patrick Clegg will also have to step up and run for us next week. It will be next man up.”

Southern Guilford falls to (3-6) on the season and (3-1) in the conference with the loss. The Storm travels to Southern Alamance Friday night in the next to last game of the regular season.

Southeast improved to (7-2) overall and (3-1) in the conference with the win. The Falcons will look to continue their winning ways as they play host to Williams High School Friday night in another conference game.

  1. Just a couple of side notes. Those Southern Guilford scores came on our the third string defense. Also, we have WAAAAAY too many unforced penalties. False starts, illegal substitution. Right now we are beating the teams that we are supposed to beat, but we have the ability to beat teams that we “aren’t supposed to beat” as well. The players have to realize that though. The loss to Eastern last week could have EASILY been a win. We have to start believing and executing. We can go one and out in the playoffs or really make a run. It can go either way.

  2. I apologize for the error. Due to the close proximity of the numbers and the fact that it was difficult to read the numbers on the uniforms I thought it was Lowes and not Medlin.
