CAMDEN, S.C. – Sophomores Alec Weary and Brendan MacDougall took turns leading the High Point University men’s golf team through the first two rounds of the Camden Invitational on Saturday.
Weary came out on fire racking up five birdies en route to a -3 (67) in the first round. In the second round, MacDougall took the lead carding a -2 (68) and moving up to a tie for ninth on the leaderboard. Overall, High Point is tied for 10th out of 17 squads after shooting a 290 and 291 (+10).
“This is a course that if you don’t respect it, then it can really come back to bite you,” head coach Brady Gregor said. “We had some growth areas today and are really hoping our best score of the tournament is coming in the final round. We had two individuals who really played well today, but we will need all five players in it tomorrow for a solid team score and to hopefully make a move up the leaderboard.”
MacDougall opened his day with an eagle on fourth hole. From there, the Calgary, Alberta native finished the first round +1 (71). However, he bounced back with his fifth below-par round in eight rounds to move up the leaderboard (71-68, -1).
Two strokes behind MacDougall, Weary backed up his -3 (67) with a +4 (74) and is tied for 14th through two rounds.
Meanwhile, sophomore RJ Bartolomucci carded matching 75s and will enter the final round on Sunday in a tie for 60th. Back in the lineup after playing as an individual at the Phoenix Invitational earlier this week, freshman Ethan Willis is tied for 77th (77-76, 143).
Rounding out the lineup, sophomore Justin Lenzini bounced back from an opening round 82 with a 74 in the second round and ranks 87th in the competitive field.
Playing as an individual, junior Davis Kiger is tied for 42nd after firing a 73 and a 74 on the day.
The Panthers are back out on the course on Sunday morning for the third and final round of the tournament.
