ROCK HILL, S.C.—The High Point University women’s golf won the Winthrop Intercollegiate Sunday (Oct. 22) at the Rock Hill Country Club (Par 72 – 5,993 yards) in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Panthers shot a second-round 303 to finish at 589, the second-lowest 36-hole score in school history. HPU defeated runner-up Winthrop (591) by two strokes and finished ahead of Presbyterian (619), Appalachian State (621) and Austin Peay State (627).

It is High Point’s ninth team event win in program history and the first since the Low Country Intercollegiate in March. It is the second team victory under second-year head coach Alexis Bennett.

“It’s always tough to follow up a low round, but I’m proud of the girls for hanging tough and getting the job done today,” Bennett said. “Four players in the top ten and three rounds under par is definitely the type of momentum boost we needed and will certainly help carry us into tomorrow as we switch courses and events.”

Three members of the Purple & White were honored on the all-tournament team, including sophomore Samantha Vodry (146, +2), freshman Anna Holmberg (147, +3) and senior Cayla Smith (148, +4), who finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Vodry led the Panthers with a 2-under 70 in the second round, her second round under par this season.

Sophomore Tonrak Tasaso finished in a tie for sixth at 5-over 149, while freshman Caitie Gelhausen improved on her first-round score by eight strokes to finish 47th at 167.

The Panthers are back in action Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 23-24) at the Terrier Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Spartanburg (Part 72 – 6,012 yards).
