Elon Football’s Cheek Named to 2017 CFPA Midseason FCS Performer of the Year Watch List

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Elon freshman quarterback Davis Cheek is one of 36 players chosen to the midseason watch list for the 2017 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS National Performer of the Year.

Through the first eight games of his collegiate career, Cheek ranks 16th nationally with a 63.9 percent completion percentage and is 20th in the country with a passing efficiency rating of 149.1. The Matthews, N.C., resident has thrown for 1,550 yards (53rd in the country) and 12 touchdowns (44th nationally). Cheek also ranks among the national leaders in yards per completions (32nd) and points responsible for (54th).

He has posted three outings of 300-plus passing yards, including a 357-yard performance in a victory over No. 13 Villanova.

Twice named the CAA Football Rookie of the Week, Cheek has led the Phoenix to four fourth-quarter comebacks as Elon has posted a 7-1 overall record and a 5-0 mark in conference play. The maroon and gold have defeated four ranked opponents and have won seven consecutive games, which is tied for the fourth-longest winning streak within a single season in program history.

Cheek and the Phoenix will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 4 when Elon hosts Towson for a 2 p.m. game.
