ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s and women’s golf teams are set to take part in a global experience as they will travel to Scotland, Nov. 17-26, while exploring and learning about the native culture and history for their learning experience.
The golf teams, along with the Elon women’s lacrosse team, become the latest Elon University athletic programs to travel abroad as a part of the Elon Commitment to diversity and global engagement for its students. The teams will complete their learning requirement visiting several cities, which include Glasgow, Edinburgh, St. Andrews and Stirling during their 10-day trip.
“This trip to Scotland is just another example of what makes the Elon University student-athlete experience the best,” said head men’s golf coach Don Hill. ” This is a fantastic opportunity for our golfers.”
The student-athletes are taking the class, “From St Andrews to Augusta: Scottish Golf and Culture Through Time”, and are studying the chronological history of the game of golf and its foundation in Scotland. During the trip, they will examine the specific lifestyle of the Scottish people and how it may reflect an overarching national identity that impacts their golfing philosophy. Finally, they will make comparisons with American golf and how differences in game approaches may indicate general cultural differences between the two nations.
The Phoenix will also get to compete on several different golf courses during the trip. The first course is Dundonald Links in Troon, the host the 2017 Scottish Open. Elon will then play that the Carnoustie Links in Carnoustie, which is hosting the 2018 British Open. The teams will then round out the trip at St. Andrews Links, the home of golf, playing on the Old Course and New.
“This will be a great chance for our student-athletes to not only play some of the most historic golf courses in the world, but to be able to have an educational experience in one of the most storied regions of the world,” added head women’s golf coach Chris Dockrill.
