SEASON OPENER….Randolph at Ferrum Wednesday 7:30 p.m.

FERRUMAs an NCAA Division III basketball player, Tyler Sanborn was a winner.

He hopes to taste success again, this time as a Division III head coach.

The former Guilford College star was hired in July to coach the Ferrum men’s basketball team, which has not had a winning season since the 2012-13 campaign.

The 6-foot-10 Sanborn helped Guilford reach the Division III final four in Salem in 2009 and 2010. He was named the Division III player of the year as a senior center in 2010, when he averaged 19.8 points and 14.1 rebounds. He scored 1,398 points and snared 1,133 rebounds in his college career.

Sanborn’s background has helped him earn the respect of his new charges.

“They know my playing career and all of that, so they understand that I know what it takes to win at a high level in Division III,” Sanborn, 29, said. “I think they’re more willing to buy in because of that.”
