ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Katie Lewis(Southeast Guilford High School) scored a team-high 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the Greensboro College women’s basketball team topped the Wildcats of Randolph College in their first game of the Jean Edge Classic, hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan College, 66-54.

After playing the first 10 minutes to a 17-17 tie, Greensboro used a 12-4 run that lasted just over 4:31 to take a 29-23 lead. Kamerin Williams, who finished with nine points, sparked the run with an old fashion three-point play before adding two more points on the Pride’s ensuing possession.

As the run progressed, Laprecious England recorded a three-point play of her own, while Katie Lewis and A’Liyah Woods had two points each.

Following the Pride run, Randolph was able to pull within two points at 29-27 before Greensboro established their largest lead of the half at 37-30 following a Kylee Barry three-pointer, before taking their seven-point advantage into halftime.

Greensboro then continued their momentum they established over the final two minutes of the second period over the first five minutes of the third period.

Randolph scored the first bucket of the third period to pull within five, but Rasheika Gregory scored four of her 10 second half points to push the Greensboro advantage out to nine before Lewis made the score 45-34.

Despite holding the 11-point advantage, the Greensboro offense began to stumble over the next 12 minutes, allowing the Wildcats to battle back to tie the game at 50 with 6:47 to play in the fourth period.

Greensboro was then able to recover from their offensive struggles as they closed out the game on a 16-4 run to secure the 12-point victory. Lewis and Gregory combined for 13 points during the run, while Lauren Jenkins added two points.

“We played better today than we did on Thursday,” Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. “We found more people that will be able to help us, and I hope that we will continue to improve tomorrow.”

The Pride defense was able to force 20 Wildcats turnovers in the game, which resulted in 17 points, while holding a 17-11 advantage on the offensive glass. Williams had a game-high 12 rebounds, while England dished out a game-high give assists.

The Greensboro women will close out the Jean Edge Classic Sunday when they take on Wesley College at 2 p.m.
