Elon Women’s Tennis Adds Three for 2018-19 Season

ELON, N.C. – Elon University head women’s tennis coach Elizabeth Anderson announced the additions of Olivia Archer (Cornelius, N.C.), Uma Nayar (Ipoh, Malaysia), and Yun Shiau (Taichung, Taiwan) for the upcoming 2018-19 season.

“We are thrilled with the signing of Olivia, Uma and Yun,” said Anderson. “Their strong focus and relentless determination to reach their full potential, both in the classroom and on the court, is very impressive. We are excited to welcome them and look forward to seeing the tremendous impact they will make here at Elon.”

Archer is a four-star recruit according to the TennisRecruiting.net and achieved her career-high national ranking of 79 and is currently the third-ranked player in North Carolina this year. She joins the Phoenix squad from Jenny Connell High School and competed at Evert Tennis Academy. Recently at the junior level, Archer won the North Carolina Tar Hill Qualifier in the summer of 2017. During her career at Jenny Connell High School, Archer is a two-time NCHSAA 2A Women’s Doubles Champion and won the 2016-17 NCHSAA 2A Women’s Singles Championship. She also has twice been named the Big South Conference Player of the Year and the Lake Norman Charter MVP, as well as the NCHSAA 2A MVP while guiding Jenny Connell High School to three NCHSAA 2A Team State Championships. During her junior season in 2016-17, Archer also earned the NCHSAA 2A Tournament Sportsmanship award.

Nayar will join the Phoenix from Centenary State High School in Brisbane, Australia. At the junior level, Nayar has a career-high International Tennis Federation (ITF) ranking of 346. She also represented Malaysia on the Junior Fed Cup Team in 2016. During her time at Centenary State, she helped her team a TAS Tennis Championship and was a runner-up in the Metropolitan Finals. She also earned Junior Sportsperson of the Year honors and won the Silver Academic Award.

Shiau earned a runner-up finish in singles at the 2017 Brandywine Tennis UTR tournament and finished third at the 2017 ITA Summer Circuit tournament at Charlotte while competing on the junior circuit. She also earned U-16 singles and doubles championships at the 2016 National Youth Bonny Tennis Championships and a singles title at the 2016 National Youth Fai and Tennis Championships. Additionally, Shiau reached the singles quarterfinals at the 2015 National Games. While attending Dah Chin Commercial & Industrial Vocational High School, she led her team to a 2017 Chenghua County Cup Championship. Her team competed at the highest level participating in the National High School Athletic Games in 2015 and 2016.
