College men’s basketball final: Averett 82, Guilford 69

GREENSBORO, N.C. – James Contreras led five Cougars who scored in double figures with 19 points as Averett University won at #18 Guilford College, 82-69, on Tuesday night.

Carson Long tallied a game-best 20 points in the defeat for Guilford (2-2). He was 6-of-13 shooting and made 7-of-8 free throws and had five blocked shots. Alston Thompson notched 14 points for the home team.

The Quakers led 33-32 at halftime. Averett, however, went on an 18-8 run over the first 5:35 of the second half en route to the win. AU shot 57-percent (16-28) over the last period. Austin DeLucia came off the bench to score 17 for the Cougars. Darin Kenter added 12 and Montre’ Cash and Jalen Burnett both contributed 10 points.

Averett (2-1) made 14-of-24 3-pointers in the contest and GC hit 4-of-16. For the game, Averett shot 52-percent (28-54) to Guilford’s 45-percent (26-58). Both teams grabbed 31 rebounds. Guilford committed just nine turnovers and the Cougars had only eight miscues.

The Quakers return to action on Nov. 29 when Washington & Lee visits. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener begins at 5 p.m.
