Brown Lifts HPU Women’s Basketball to 69-64 Triumph at Stetson

• Sophomore Camryn Brown poured in a career-high 24 points including nine in the fourth quarter to carry HPU to the win.
• Senior Kat Harris (15) and juniors Emma Bockrath (14) and Shea Morgan (10) gave the Panthers four scoring in double figures.
• High Point’s win was just the second by a visiting team at Stetson in the Hatters’ last 12 home contests.

DeLAND, Fla. – Sophomore Camryn Brown scored 15 points after the break to lead the High Point University women’s basketball team to a 69-64 comeback victory at Stetson on Monday night in the Edmunds Center.

The Panthers (3-2) trailed by 10 with a minute left in the third period as the Hatters (3-4) built a 50-40 edge. However, 12 points from Brown paced the Purple & White as they outscored Stetson 29-14 over the final 11 minutes.

“I am proud of our girls’ effort and resiliency,” head coach DeUnna Hendrix said. “It’s not easy to play Stetson at their place, but our girls showed poise and confidence. We’ll celebrate this one tonight and get back to work tomorrow.”

Brown finished the night with 24 points – a career high – while knocking down a career-best five three pointers on just eight attempts. The Copley, Ohio native added four assists while posting a +/- of 14 on the night in 32 minutes.

After several close calls the past two seasons, the win snaps a 20-game stretch without a win over a Division I non-conference opponent. It also gives HPU a win over one of the top mid-major programs who had won 10 of the last 11 home games.

Going the distance for HPU, juniors Emma Bockrath and Shea Morgan both tallied eight boards while scoring 14 points and 10 points, respectively in 40 minutes of action. Bockrath added a team-high five assists.

On the inside, redshirt-junior Kennedy Currie held her own against a bigger Stetson frontline grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking three shots to go with six points. Off the bench, senior Kat Harris netted 15 critical points while Brown was saddled with foul trouble.

Led by Currie’s effort, HPU outrebounded the Hatters 40-32 despite losing the battle for points in the paint 36-22.

Defensively, the Panthers limited the Hatters to 39 percent shooting overall (25-64) and just 3-of-20 from beyond the arc. On the other end, HPU hit 44 percent from the field (25-57) and 6-of-18 from downtown. The key down the stretch was HPU’s 13-of-14 mark from the charity stripe as Stetson went 11-of-14 on the night.

Neither team could get it going early as HPU was held scoreless until Brown’s first three-pointer at the 5:26 mark gave the Panthers a 3-2 edge. From there, Brown canned another trifecta as High Point built a 14-10 lead with a minute remaining in the frame.

However, with Brown on the bench in foul trouble, the Hatters were able to build a 30-24 advantage with 1:55 left in the half. Hendrix made the call to reinsert Brown into the lineup and the sophomore answered hitting another three to send HPU to the break down just three, 30-27.

After the break Stetson slowly built a 50-40 lead with 1:01 on the third-quarter clock. But after Morgan converted a layup and Brown drained two more three-pointers, Harris made it an 11-0 run with a three of her own that gave the Panthers a 51-50 edge with 8:47 to play.

Stetson immediately regained the lead and held on until Brown converted two free throws with 1:54 to play. From there, the Panthers got a jumper from Brown and went 6-of-7 from the line to secure the 69-64 triumph.
