Elon Holds Strong at No. 6 in CollegeInsider.com Women Basketball’s Mid-Major Poll

ELON, N.C. – Elon University women’s basketball held strong at No. 6 in this week’s CollegeInsider.com Women’s Mid-Major poll released late Tuesday, Nov. 28.

The Phoenix jumped up to the No. 6 spot in last week’s release of the poll. It stood at No. 8 in the first release of the regular season and was No. 10 in the preseason edition of the poll.

In the Top 5, there was movement this week with South Dakota State and Belmont jumping up to Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, while Florida Gulf Coast and Northern Colorado fell two spots apiece from Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, to Nos. 4 and 5. Green Bay kept the No. 1 spot for the second week in a row with 29 first-place votes. South Dakota State, who also participated in the Puerto Rico Clasico with Elon and beat NC State and Charlotte in the tournament, garnered two first-place votes.

Elon is the top CAA team ranked in the poll. James Madison is the only other CAA program in the Top 25, though William & Mary is among those receiving votes. JMU stands 20th with its 2-4 record.

The Phoenix is slated to open its five-game December slate on Saturday, Dec. 2, when it travels 47 miles west to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. inside LJVM Coliseum. In the first meeting between the two programs since 1980, Wake Forest beat Elon 78-68 in Alumni Gym last November. Before that, Elon held a 14-2 lead in the all-time series with all 16 of those games coming between 1972 and 1980.
