High Point MBB Falls at College of Charleston, 70-58

• The Panthers dropped a 70-58 decision at College of Charleston Monday night
• Junior Andre Fox scored 24 points, the fifth time this season he has scored 20 or more points
• Senior Jordan Whitehead grabbed a career-high nine rebounds

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The High Point University men’s basketball team fell to College of Charleston, 70-58, Monday night (Dec. 4) at the TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.

The Cougars (6-2) pulled away from the Panthers (3-5) with a 22-7 after HPU pulled within two at 45-43 at the 8:10 mark. After being held to 22 points and 33.3 percent shooting in the first half, College of Charleston shot 61.9 percent (13-21) in the second half, including six 3-point field goals. High Point shot 44.2 percent for the game (23-52).

“We’re developing, a fairly inexperienced group that is maturing,” HPU head coach Scott Cherry said. “I thought our guys played extended minutes and battled as hard as they could. I’m really excited about this team. It’s been a tough stretch for us (with road games in three of last four games), but I’m glad it’s over with and now we move on.”

Junior Andre Fox scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Panthers. It was the fifth time this season Fox has scored 20 or more points. Senior Jordan Whitehead added a career-high nine rebounds and tied his career high with seven points.

College of Charleston started 5-of-9 from the field, but the Panthers piled on the pressure defensively and the Cougars hit only three of their next 15 attempts. The Cougars led, 14-5, seven minutes into the game, but HPU went on a 24-8 run over the final 13 minutes to lead 29-22 at the half.

In the second half, College of Charleston opened the frame on a 14-2 run over the first 3:37 to take a 36-31 lead.

Joe Chealey led four Cougars in double figures with17 points, while Nick Harris had nine points, nine rebounds and four blocks.

The Panthers return to action Sunday (Dec. 10) to face Toccoa Falls. Tip-off at the Millis Center is set for 2 p.m.
