Game Report on Southwest Guilford-Dudley Boys Basketball

The Cowboys of Southwest Guilford hit the road to open up conference play in the new Piedmont Triad 3A Conference. Southwest traveled over to Dudley High School to face off against the Panthers. Southwest dominated both regular season match-ups last year as well as the match-up the season prior. This time around however, has more meaning since they are now conference opponents. Both teams are coming off wins and have good overall records to start this young season. Who would keep their winning streaks alive?

The Panthers got on the board first, but the Cowboys responded right away. The teams traded baskets again to make it 4-4 by the 6:35 mark. Dudley took advantage of some uncharacteristic Southwest turnovers to go up 10-4 at the 5:32 point. The Cowboys shook some of the cobwebs and went on a 9-0 spurt to go ahead 13-10 with 2:20 to go. Dudley fought back to go back ahead 16-15 with a minute to go. The Cowboys responded quickly but a made free throw tied the game up to close the frame at 17 all.

A Panthers 3 ball opened up the frame to go up 20-17 right away. The Panthers steadily built the lead and kept the Cowboys at arms length the rest of the half with the Panthers taking a 41-38 lead.

Southwest opened the scoring on a 4-0 spurt to take a 42-41 lead at the 7:15 mark. Southwest managed to fight off the Panthers and maintain the lead until the 37 second mark when the Panthers snuck in a layup to take a 52-51 lead. The teams traded frantic baskets with the Panthers holding a slim 54-53 lead at the close of the third frame.

In the final frame the Cowboys forced several bad possessions as well as turnovers. The Panthers only managed 5 points in the frame and went scoreless the in the final 5:10 of the frame as the Cowboys converted those turnovers and bad shots into points and pulled away for the 70-59 road win.

Dudley was led by Tim Boulware with 14 points. Southwest had a great team effort. They were paced by: JT Butler with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals; Jayden Turner with 18 points and 10 rebounds; and Christian Martin with 16 points, 9 rebounds, steal, block, and an assist.
