Game Report on Southwest Guilford-Ragsdale Boys Basketball:Christian Martin startin’ to do his part in the Cowboys’ big wins and Martin playing smart in tonight’s victory over Ragsdale

The Cowboys played hosts tonight against long time rival Ragsdale.

These former conference foes met the last day of November and it was a dominant win by the Cowboys. Southwest is coming off a tough last second loss just last night, while the Tigers have stumbled as of late having lost their last two contests.

Would the Cowboys be able to regroup from an emotional and physical dog fight? Can Ragsdale bounce back and get a win over the Cowboys for the first time since January of 2012?

The Cowboys opened up the scoring on the night to go up 2-0. The Tigers came right back down and scored a basket to tie the game for the only time for the rest of the game at 2-2. It took a minute of game action, but a made 3 point basket by the Cowboys gave them the lead for good at 5-2. A defensive stop by Southwest and another bucket put it at 7-2 at the 5:45 mark. The Tigers were able to get a 3 point play of their own to cut it to 7-5 at the 4:57 point. From that point the Cowboys forced several steals and used a 13-3 run to close out the opening frame up 20-8 by holding the Tigers scoreless for over 4 minutes.

The action came to a screeching halt in the second frame. The game became sloppy, inconsistent, and turnover plagued for both sides. Neither team could put together multiple good possessions or execute anything positive. The visitors managed to outscore the Cowboys 12-10 on the frame which took the halftime score in favor of Southwest 30-20.

The second half started in similar fashion. Teams trading poor possessions and poor shooting. A few minutes into the frame the Cowboys managed to finally put something together and got the margin up to 41-25 at the 3:52 mark. The margin got as large at 18, but the Tigers managed another bucket before the stanza closed at 45-29.

The final frame opened with a Cowboys’ three pointer to make it 48-29. Unfortunately the Cowboys fell into some quicksand and allowed the Tigers to go on a free throw parade to the tune of a 12-1 run to make it interesting at 49-41 at the 5:42 mark. Southwest started to put defensive possessions together, and played signature Cowboys basketball. In a blur it was 57-41 at 3:58. From there the gas pedal stayed on the floor and the steals kept the momentum in favor of the hosts as they pulled away for the 70-49 home non-conference win.

The Tigers were led by Trey Goode with 14 points. The Cowboys got a solid team effort despite some lulls in efficiency. Southwest was paced by Christian Martin with 21 points, 6 Rebounds, 4 Steals, 3 Assists and a Block.

  1. The tigers will not be a productive team this season if they don’t come together and play as a team. I see very selfish play amongst the players, hence, many losses……
