LEXINGTON, Ky. – Bo Schuh scored 17 points off the bench, including a tie-breaking layup with 90 seconds left, in Transylvania University’s 80-77 basketball victory over Guilford College Thursday evening. The contest marked the conclusion of Transylvania’s two-day Don Lane Classic, named for the Pioneers venerable head coach.
Schuh, who scored 10 second-half points, added a free throw and a key defensive rebound in the final minute as Transylvania (7-2) fought off a Quakers’ (4-6) comeback. The Pioneers made four of six free throws in that time and watched a buzzer-beating three-point shot by Guilford’s Trever Hyatt rim out.
Guilford’s Jarrod Rogers (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) tallied 14 of his career-high 18 points in the second half and led a Quakers’ rally from a 46-42 halftime deficit. He made three of his four three-pointers in a 15-4 Guilford run midway through the half. Joah Logan capped the spurt with a three-pointer and a layup, which gave the guests a 67-61 lead with 10:22 left in regulation.
Rogers’ final trifecta opened a 72-67 Quakers’ lead with 5:13 remaining, but Transylvania closed on a 13-5 run. Guilford went scoreless during a 7-0 Pioneers’ spurt before Alston Thompson tied the game at 74 with a basket at the 1:37 mark. Schuh answered at the other end to put the Pioneers in front for good.
Transylvania’s Kyle Gullett led all scorers with 19 points and represented the hosts on the all-tournament team. Teammate Michael Jefferson made all seven shots from the floor for 14 points and Gabe Schmitt added nine. Cooper Theobold scored all eight of his points with a perfect night at the foul line. He also led the Pioneers with six rebounds and seven assists. Transylvania made 19 of 23 free throws and enjoyed a 33-27 rebounding edge.
Rogers entered the game 0-for-8 from three-point land this season, but made four-of-seven long shots in the second half. He also doled out a game-high nine assists, a personal best. Carson Long and Marcus Curry (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford (Bridgewater)) added 13 points apiece for the Quakers, who shot 54.5 percent from the floor and made a season-best 12 three-pointers. Curry represented Guilford on the all-tournament team. Hyatt knocked down two treys and tallied 11 points off the bench.
Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers return home December 30 to host 18th-ranked Skidmore College at 4:30 p.m. in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
