Top-seeded Winston-Salem Prep delivered the first-ever Frank Spencer Tournament championship for Head Coach Andre Gould with a resounding 65-47 win over East Forsyth in the title game at Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem Thursday night.

Prep ended a tight first half with an Zach Austin shot at the buzzer to open up a five-point margin (25-20), then scored 15 of the next 20 points in the first six minutes of the second half to extend its lead to 40-25. The Phoenix were never challenged down the stretch, leading by as many as 21 (65-44) in the final minute.

The Eagles, now 8-3, crippled their effort to win a sixth Spencer title for East Forsyth with 20 turnovers, 14 in the first half, while Prep committed half as many against an Eagles’ defense that had been a staple of its run to the tournament title game.

Spencer MVP Davien Williamson led all scorers with 20 points while teammates Austin (14 points, 6 rebounds) & K.J. Watson (12 points, 7 rebounds) dominated the paint for the winners. Shemar Watkins led East with 12 points & Connor Sparrow had a game-high 12 rebounds.

Joining Williamson on the All-Tournament team were Prep’s Austin & Chaz Gwyn, East’s Watkins & Ben Uloko from West Forsyth. East returns to action next Wednesday night at home against Mount Tabor, who the Eagles defeated in the Spencer semifinals to reach Thursday’s championship game.
