Game Report on Southwest Guilford-Western Guilford Boys Basketball:Turner, Huggins, Butler and Martin startin’ to make it rough on the opposition(Cowboys are 11-3)

The Cowboys welcomed in 2018 by hosting newly formed conference opponent Western Guilford.

The Hornets closed out 2017 by defeating the Aussie Travelers from Brisbane Australia and wanted to get a winning streak going in the new year. The Cowboys have won 6 straight, including winning the Sheetz Holiday Classic by defeating a quality opponent in The Burlington School. The new year brings a chance to regroup and energize going into the conference schedule.

The game opened up with a Western Guilford 3 pointer to give them the early lead. The ensuing Cowboys possession trimmed the lead to 3-2. After the teams traded some sloppy plays, the Cowboys took the lead for the night at 4-3 at the 5:50 mark. Southwest scored 12 more points in a row to make it 16-3 at the 3:15 mark. Western was finally able to stop the bleeding momentarily to make it 16-5 at the 2:38 mark. Another 10-0 run by the Cowboys made it 26-5 with 22 seconds to go in the first. The Hornets were able to get a bucket just before the frame closed at 26-7.

The second quarter opened up just like the first, with Western scoring 3 points to make it 26-10. Southwest answered with a basket, but a Hornets 4-0 spurt made it 28-14. The Cowboys upped the pressure and tempo some more and a 6-0 spurt made it 34-14 midway through the frame. The margin hovered there at 20 points until a series of fast-break alley-oop dunks pushed the margin out to 46-18 to close out the opening frame.

The second half was really when the half court pressure of the Cowboys started to click as they forced several turnovers and rushed shot attempts. The margin hit the mercy rule midway through the frame at 64-24. The third frame closed out rapidly at 69-24.

The final frame ran out even faster as the Cowboys bench continued what they started in the second half as they rode out to a convincing 82-28 home conference victory.

Western was led by Michael Bowens with 14 points. The Cowboys got great contributions from the entire roster. Those that reached double figures were; Jayden Turner (16), Milli Huggins (11), JT Butler (10), and Christian Martin (10).
