Teara Johnson(Dudley High School) Named CIAA Rookie of the Week
from the WSSU Rams’ athletics website at www.wssurams.com:
CHARLOTTE, NC – Winston-Salem State University freshman guard Teara Johnson(Dudley HS) was selected as the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week, Tuesday morning. The freshman took the honor after a pair of great performances in her last two games for the Rams.
Johnson has shown some steady improvement early in her freshman and that improvement showed up in her last two games. In those two games, she totaled 25 points, including scoring a career-high 13 points points in the Rams’ 81-64 loss to the Bowie State Bulldogs. She was seven-for-eight from the free throw line in the game with a pair of assists and a steal. She was also impressive in the Rams’ dominating 103-81 win over West Virginia State. She recorded 12 points with seven assists in the game. She continued her great free throw shooting at four-for-four from the line. She was also two-for-two from the three-point line.
Johnson and the Rams will return to action, Thursday, when the team heads to Petersburg, Virginia to take on the Virginia State Trojans. For more information on Rams women’s basketball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
Leissner, Hopkins(Dudley High School) Receive America East Weekly Awards
BOSTON – Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) and Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley HS) of the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team were named Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, by America East on Tuesday.
The duo helped lead UNH to an 83-66 victory against intrastate rival Dartmouth College on Dec. 30.
Hopkins recorded 11 points and three rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. The freshman guard shot 50% from the floor, including 3-for-6 from 3-point range, to account for all 11 points.
Hopkins did a majority of his damage in the first half, when he made 3 of 6 field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers, and pulled down two boards in 12 minutes to help the Wildcats build a halftime lead that would not be relinquished.
It is the first Rookie of the Week accolade for Hopkins.
