East Forsyth dominated the middle stages of it’s home game against Mount Tabor, then withstood a furious late rally by the Spartans enroute to a 58-53 win at home Wednesday night in Jack Musten Gymnasium in Kernersville.

The visitors led by as many as six points (13-7) early as East opened with five turnovers on its first six possessions but fell behind after the Eagles’ smothering defense fueled a seven-point swing within a minute to take the lead for good at 14-13 two minutes into the second quarter. It was the last lead for the Spartans, who trailed by as many as 15 several times during the third quarter, including 48-33 at the end of the period. East held Mount Tabor scoreless for almost six minutes at the beginning of the quarter.

Mount Tabor, ranked third in the North Carolina 3A state rankings, implemented trapping full-court pressure at the start of the final period, cutting the East lead to four (52-48) behind nine points from Quest Aldridge, his entire output for the game. A driving layup by the Eagles’ Tanis Samuels off a rebound/assist from Tyren Hairston & free throws from Savon Brintley (4) & Shemar Watkins (2) in the final minute sealed the win for East Forsyth.

Watkins led another balanced scoring ledger for the Eagles with 13 points while Brintley added 10. Isaiah Wilkins led all scorers with 20 points for Mount Tabor (11-2), whose only other defeat in the 2017-18 season came to East Forsyth last week in the semifinals of the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic in Winston-Salem. East Forsyth begins Central Piedmont Conference play at home Friday night against West Forsyth.

East Forsyth head coach Mike Muse….Mount Tabor head coach Andy Muse….Along with their dad Tom Muse have coached or have been coaching basketball in Forsyth County for over 60 years……On Wednesday night Mike Muse walks out with the belt, with his Eagles now having topped the MT Spartans twice this season….The coaches will put all of the honor and glory on their players, but a coaching matchup like this one is still one for the books…..
