College Women’s Basketball Final: Washington and Lee 62, Guilford 59

LEXINGTON, Va. — Taylor Casey scored a game-high 18 points as Washington and Lee held off visiting Guilford College, 62-59, on Friday. Kendyl Medlin’s game-tying three-pointer was off the mark as the final seconds expired.

The Generals (9-3, 3-1) snapped a nine-game Quaker winning streak as GC fell to 9-2 and 3-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. The win was W&L’s first over Guilford since 2011.

The game featured 16 lead changes and three ties. Erin Hughes made two free throws with 4:32 remaining to give the Generals a 56-55 edge. They never trailed again.

Miracle Walters led Guilford with 15 points. She was 6-15 shooting and converted three of four free throws. Lauren Ramsey scored 12 points and Jasmine McBride contributed 11 for the visitors. Ramsey had three assists in the contest. She now sits at 257 helpers, good enough for 10 among Guilford’s career leaders

Casey made 9-11 free throws for the Generals. Katie Popp and Emma Redding tallied 16 and 13 points respectively for the home team.

Guilford led 16-10 after the first quarter, but WLU held a 26-25 edge at halftime. The Quakers shot 41-percent (24-58) to Washington and Lee’s 35-percent (17-48). The Generals made 21-25 free throws to GC’s 10-15. Guilford trailed in three-point baskets, 7-1.

The Quakers travel to Emory & Henry on Wednesday (1/10). The ODAC contest begins at 7 p.m.
