  1. SO WHAT DID EASTERN DO BESIDES NOT PLAY THAT THEY ARE NOW TIED WITH SMITH? AND WHY ARE THE GIRLS AND JV BOYS PLAYING BUT NOT VARSITY BOYS?

  2. Yes I was wondering some of the same things….

The win by Smith over Mount Tabor on the road may what pushed Smith into the tie with EG and EG ended up being idle last Friday night due to the Alamance County Schools being closed last Friday….Smith got the big road win and won fairly decisively and that must be what got them the boost and it was nothing that EG did or didn’t do….

I also was wondering why the EG boys won’t be facing Smith tomorrow night…I for one, would like to see that game….Smith is tall and it would give us a chance to see how EG stacks up against Smith’s height advantage with Gainey, Gamble and Bigelow and how well Smith could work to hang with Jaylen Alston and Montez Venable….

Jacob Crutchfield, Cameron Hayes and others would have to have big games vs. Venable and Alston and Silas Mason would have to kick in and help here too, when Alston gets past his defenders and he will, believe me…

The help defense vs. Alston is the key to trying to stay with and be in the game vs. EG and if the back defender doesn’t leave his man and come help when Alston gets by, he is gone to the basket/rack and he will convert on most all cases…

Alston seems to be better at times from the field than he is at the Free Throw line…

In the past two to three years I have not seen a game where Venable did not hit Alston for a back-door, alley-oop dunk…They always get at least one a game, as they catch the defense napping on at least one occasion…

If they decide at the last minute to have Smith and EG meet on Tuesday night, the JV boys and the Varsity girls already set to play/meet, call me and I will be there for that one…

Would like to see it now and might end up seeing it in the East Regional Final, if Smith goes East and Eastern Guilford stays East, which you think that they would and if Cox Mill doesn’t take the NCHSAA 3-A West, I want to be hanging out with and see the team that does….

Good questions and I hope we have helped or shed some light on this one…I do think the big win at Mount Tabor last Friday night, gave Smith the boost that pushed them into the Tie for third….

Would still like to see that Smith-EG boys game before we hit March and the winner-take-all, loser-leaves-town phase kicks in….

  3. @BASKETBALL COACH

If you’re a head coach in Guilford County or Rockingham County and you’re not already voting in our weekly coaches’ poll, shoot me an email at joe.sirera@greensboro.com and we’ll get your top 10 each week going forward.

As to the comment about Eastern, the Wildcats were ranked ahead of Smith in the previous week’s poll and Smith moved up to tie them at No. 3. I assume that was the coaches who voted recognizing the Golden Eagles’ win vs. Mount Tabor, but not penalizing Eastern simply because their scheduled opponent Friday night was not in school and couldn’t play them because of inclement weather in Alamance County.

Both are quality teams that should make the NCHSAA Class 3-A playoffs incredibly tough this season.
