The Cowboys hosted Vikings of North Forsyth in Piedmont Triad 3A Conference action tonight. The Vikings came into tonight’s contest on a 3 game losing skid, and the Cowboys dropped their last contest as well. Both teams were looking to rebound and regroup to get some traction in the conference standings.

The Cowboys got on the board right away to get up 2-0, but a minute later the Vikings tied the score for the only time of the night at 2-2. The tie lasted a mere 7 seconds as Southwest scored in transition to take the lead for the remainder of the night at 4-2 at the 6:57 mark. After a defensive stop and a made three pointer it was 7-2. Six straight more points by Southwest pushed the margin to 13-2. The Vikings stopped the bleeding with a field goal to make it 13-4 at the 4:10 mark. The Vikings managed a couple of made free throws in the next couple of possessions to cut it to 13-6, but the Cowboys responded with a 4-0 spurt to close out the opening frame at 17-6.

The second quarter was a dog fight, as the Cowboys just couldn’t seem to keep the Vikings off the ropes. Every time the margin would start to expand, the Vikings would rally to keep it reasonable. Twice the Cowboys pushed the margin to 15, including 40-25 at the 1:08 mark, yet North Forsyth closed the half with another 4-0 spurt that closed it at 40-29.

The third quarter was a continuation of the same story. This time the Cowboys pushed the margin 50-31 at the 5:00 mark. The Vikings resiliently fought and chipped away until the frame closed with the margin back down in favor of Southwest at 56-46.

The final frame once again had the Cowboys jump ahead with a 6-0 run to make it 62-46. The Vikings promptly responded with a 6-0 run of their own to make it 62-52 at the 5:52 mark. The Cowboys managed to execute enough plays to keep the margin in the double figures and they rode off with a solid conference victory over the Vikings at 74-63.

The Vikings were paced by Anthony Hicks with 20 points. Southwest was paced by Jayden Turner wiht (16, 7 Rebs, 3 Stls, 2 Asts), Christian Martin with (12, 3 Rebs, 2 Asts, 2 Blks), JT Butler with (12, 8 Asts, 4 Rebs), and Cooper Cunningham with (11, 3 Rebs, 3 Asts, 2 Rebs).
