GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men’s basketball team fell to the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College Tuesday, 91-84.

Joseph Gatling scored the game’s first basket of the contest before the Pride went on to take an 8-4 lead six minutes into the game. Darus Maddox, who finished with a team-high 24 points, scored four points, while Demetrius Tilley chipped in on basket.

The two teams then traded the lead back and forth for the next 10 minutes before Maddox took it upon himself to give the Pride a nine-point lead at 45-36, with 2:02 to play in the half, following a 12-2 run in which he scored all 12 points.

However, Maddox went on to give Greensboro their largest lead of the game at 49-38 with a monstrous dunk before going into the break with a seven-point edge.

Following the break, the Pride began to struggle from the field and could not recover from a 14-5 run by the Bishops midway through the second period, falling by the seven-point margin.

“Proud of our effort tonight even though we did not get the result we wanted,” Head Coach Bryan Galuski said. “Our guys played really hard. We wanted to win and we wanted to compete, but they were just better than we were tonight.

“Our weakness as a team is that when we lose focus, we don’t play as team. You cannot go through long spells with the lack of focus as a team like N.C. Wesleyan, who is well coached, will take advantage of that and you will find yourself in a hole that you cannot recover from.”

Cornelius Johnson finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Keyford Langley had 14 points.

The Pride men will return to action 2 p.m. Saturday when they travel to take on USA South Athletic Conference newcomer Berea College for the first time in program history. For more information on Greensboro College men’s basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
