After battling through the first half, the Eastern Guilford Wildcats seniors stepped up to their coach’s challenge to lead their team to a 62-44 victory over the Southern Guilford Storm on Friday night.

The Wildcats came out strong and jumped out to a 13-0 lead and finished the first quarter leading 14-7.

The second quarter saw Eastern’s lead diminish because of their struggles at the free throw line.  Tyler Dearman’s three consecutive three pointers and Mitahjj Cooper’s five points added to the Storm’s momentum heading into halftime.

Eastern head coach Joe Spinks’ halftime message was motivational.

“I went in and said I don’t want to see us lose and opportunity to do something special,” Spinks said. “I walked back on the court and got my guys together, told them I love all of you. I want to enjoy this process with you, and I want you to enjoy the process. They did the rest.”

Jaylen Alston, a main contributor to the Eastern offense, had three points at halftime. But that number soared in the second half with Alston scoring 21 more points.

“I came out to a slow start in the first half,” Alston said. “Coach got us together at the beginning of the second half and told us to play together and play the game.”

The encouragement from his coach helped Alston and his teammates cruise through the final 16 minutes of the contest and leave victorious.

Montez Venable also contributed big numbers for the Wildcats. Venable finished with 16 points on the night.

Southern Guilford’s Tyler Dearman led the Storm in scoring with 24 points on the night. Dearman was also the only Storm player who scored in double digits.

Coach Spinks added, “I’ve been waiting for a point in the season where my guys can come together, and this is one of those moments.

“The kids did that in the second half in their defensive effort, rebounding, sharing the rock. It was the most beautiful game for me to see from them this year.”

The Eastern Guilford Wildcats improve to 16-1 on the season and 6-0 in the conference with the win. The Wildcats travel to Williams High School next Friday night.

Southern Guilford drops to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the loss to Eastern. The Storm’s next game is Tuesday the 23rd, also against Burlington Williams.
