College Track & Field News – Guilford’s Fanney Named ODAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week

FOREST, Va. – Guilford College senior Sommer Fanney (Burlington, N.C./Williams) earned the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week Award Monday.

Fanney posted the ODAC’s top times of the year in the 800 meters and the mile in Guilford’s season-opening meet, the East Tennessee State Invitational. She placed 30th among 66 runners in the 800 January 12th in two minutes, 33.86 seconds, tops among NCAA Division III contestants. Her time ranks fourth in school history. Less than 24 hours later, Fanney crossed the line in 19th place among 54 runners in 5:39.60, also tops among Division III runners in the race. Her mile time stands fifth all-time at Guilford.

Fanney, a three-year letter winner, owns each of the top-four 800 times in school history, including the record (2:27.17) set last February at the UCS Invitational. She also four of the top-six mile times at Guilford, including the record (5:32.05), also set at the 2017 UCS Invitational.
