HIGH POINT, N.C. — The High Point University men’s basketball team had five players in double figures and improved to 7-1 at home with a 73-49 victory over Presbyterian Monday night (Jan. 15) at the Millis Center.

High Point (8-9, 3-3 Big South) held Presbyterian (8-11, 1-5 Big South) to 23.1 percent shooting in the first half and 30.6 percent shooting overall. HPU hit 50.0 percent of its own shots and held a 41-24 rebounding advantage. With the win, HPU has won the last nine meetings with the Blue Hose and overall.

Junior Ricky Madison had a career-high 13 doubles to go along with 11 points for the first double-double of his career. Sophomore Brandonn Kamga led the Panthers with 13 points, while freshman Denny Slay posted 11 and junior Andre Fox and sophomore Jahaad Proctor added 10 each. It was the second time this season High Point has had five players in double figures (Toccoa Falls on Dec. 10, 2017). Proctor added five assists and HPU is now 6-1 when he has four or more assists.

“It was a good response from the other night,” HPU head coach Scott Cherry. “To come out and play the way we did after the way we lost the other night (at Campbell), we gave a good effort and did the things we need to do. Having 15 assists on 26 field goals, having a lot of guys step up and contribute and have five guys in double figures, it was a good team effort after the loss we took. I’m happy with the way the guys played from start to finish. Now it’s about building one game at a time, trying to get better, focus on the next opponent and improve our individual skills as well as our team dynamic.”

The Panther defense was strong from the start, holding the Blue Hose without a field goal for the first seven minutes. PC missed its first seven shots as the High Point jumped out to a 13-3 lead. After Presbyterian cut the lead to eight at 25-17 with 4:17 left, Proctor and Slay hit back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the lead to 14. High Point went into halftime with a 35-22 lead.

In the second half, the Panthers scored the first five points and the only other time the Blue Hose got within 13, HPU once again scored the next five to extend the lead.

With scoring first and never trailing tonight, HPU has not trailed at home in the last 116 minutes, going back to the 16:00 mark of the first half against UNC Asheville.

J.C. Younger had five 3-pointers and a game-high 19 points to lead Presbyterian.

The Panthers return to action Thursday (Jan. 18) when they host Liberty in a pivotal Big South matchup. Tip-off at the Millis Center is set for 7 p.m.
