Elon Track and Field Resumes Indoor Competition at VMI Keydet Invitational

ELON, N.C. – After over a month away from its last competition, the Elon University women’s track and field team returns to action this weekend with the Phoenix traveling to the VMI Keydet Invitational beginning on Friday, Jan. 19. The meet will conclude on Saturday, Jan. 20, inside the Corps Physical Training Facility.

Events on Friday are slated to begin at 2 p.m. with the second and final day scheduled to kickoff at 10 a.m.

Setting the Stage
Elon will be one of 27 schools that will participate in the meet this weekend. It will be the second indoor meet of the season for the Phoenix, who opened its 2017-18 indoor season on Dec. 2, at the JDL Fast Track College Kickoff Classic. Among other notable schools expected to compete at the meet include fellow Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary, intra-state programs Campbell, NC State, Charlotte, East Carolina and UNC Asheville and other notable Virginia schools such as Liberty, Virginia Tech, Radford, Hampton and host VMI.

Phoenix Scheduled to Compete This Weekend
Elon is expected to have the majority of its team in action this weekend as the Phoenix is scheduled to 24 athletes compete in events. The maroon and gold distance group will make their indoor season debut at the meet beginning with the 4×800-meter relay on Friday.

Last Time Out
Facing its first competition of the season, a number of Phoenix athletes shined at the JDL College Kickoff Classic on Dec. 2. Sophomore Skylar Barthelmes set a new personal-record in the indoor shot put as the Dartmouth, Mass., native had a throw of 12.98m and was fourth overall in the event. Teammate Bryanna Hames also finished in the top-five with her toss of 12.88m.

Barthelmes was also the top finisher for the Phoenix in the weight throw with a mark of 14.62m and was 10th overall. Freshman Charlotte Bradsher was 12th at 14.37m.

Another sophomore, Melody Burke, also did well in a couple events at the meet. The Concord, Va., native was sixth overall in the long jump with her best mark of 5.39m. She was also ninth in the triple jump with her leap of 11.08m.

Emily Smith garnered a third-place standing in the one-mile run for the Phoenix. The Philadelphia, Pa., native had a time of 5:24.52 in the race for Elon.

Megan Henderson was Elon’s top runner in the 400-meters with a time of 59.51 and was eighth overall. In the 200-meters, Desiree Ross clocked a time of 26.47 as Elon’s best performer in the event. Kayla Tulloch ran a 27.94 in the event while Aaliyah Rodgers crossed the finish line with her time of 29.03.

In the high jump, freshman Moira O’Malley cleared the bar at 1.60m for the Phoenix’s top finisher in the event. Nicole Karabas represented Elon in the pole vault with her cleared height of 3.35m, finishing tied for fourth overall.

Elon returns to the state of Virginia next weekend, Jan. 26-27, for the Liberty Kickoff in Lynchburg, Va.
