Fast Start for Elon Relay Teams at VMI Keydet Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. – A new school-record set by the 4×800-meter relay team help represent the Elon University women’s track and field team on the first day at the VMI Keydet Invitational on Friday, Jan. 19, inside the Corps Physical Training Facility.

RESULTS

The 4×800-meter quartet of Melissa Anastasakis, Brigid Brennan, Chelsea Smith and Emily Smith clocked a time of 9:17.87 in race, taking medalist honors. The time edged the previous program-best time of 9:19.02 from last season and also qualified the group for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships.

Elon picked up another victory in the distance medley relay with Brennan, Lauren Brzozowski, Emily Smith and Coralea Geraniotis combining for a time of 12:10.27. That time is now the third-best performance in school history.

In the 1,000-meters, sophomore Paige King moved into the program’s top-five performance list with her time of 3:05.16. The Hingham, Mass., native was 12th overall in the race. Sami King was Elon’s top runner in the 5,000-meters with her time of 18:41.82 and was sixth overall.

Freshman Moira O’Malley also jumped into the program’s top-five performance list in the high jump. The Harleysville, Pa., native established a new personal-best with a cleared height of 5′ 5″ (1.65m) and was fifth overall. Sophomore Melody Burke had a mark of 36″ 5.75″ (11.12m) in the triple jump, just finishing outside of the top-10. Burke also set a new personal-best mark in the high jump with a 5′ 3″ (1.60m) cleared height and was 10th in the event.

Skylar Barthelmes was 11th in the weight throw as Elon’s top finisher in the event. The sophomore had a toss of 47′ 10″ (14.58m).

The Phoenix returns to action for the second and final day of the meet tomorrow, Jan. 20, with events starting at 10 a.m.
