College Women’s Basketball Final: Roanoke 53, Guilford 52

ROANOKE, Va. — Molly Hassell had a game-high 15 points–and made the game-winning jump shot with 1.1 seconds remaining–as Roanoke College edged Guilford College, 53-52, on Wednesday night.

Miracle Walters made a layup with 35 seconds left to give the Quakers a 52-51 lead. Guilford forced a turnover and a defensive stop, but a Quaker miscue with seven seconds on the clock gave the Maroons and Hassell its last-second chance. Essence Abraham missed a shot as time expired for GC.

Guilford dropped to 12-4 and 6-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. RC is now 7-11, 4-5.

Freshman Julie Carini tied a career high with 14 points. She was 6-1

6 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. Walters added 12 points for the visitors on 6-11 shooting.

Both teams had 45 rebounds in the game. Lauren Ramsey grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds. GC teammate Abraham added 11 boards.

Neither team led by more than six points the entire contest. The game featured five ties and seven lead changes. The score was 27-27 at halftime.

Defense ruled as neither team shot well. Guilford was 23-74 from the field for 31-percent. RC shot 32-percent (19-60). The Maroons led in three-pointers, 5-2. The Quakers converted 4-5 free throws. Roanoke was 10-15.

Hassell was 5-10 from the field for the home club. Allison Livengood contributed 11 points and Victoria Maxwell pulled down 12 rebounds for Roanoke.

The Quakers host Washington and Lee on Saturday (1/27) at 2 p.m.
