Guilford College Quaker Track and Field Competed at Finn Pincus Invitational

ROANOKE, Va. – The Guilford College track and field teams spent Saturday competing at the Finn Pincus Invitational, hosted by Roanoke College.

A’lexus Newkirk recorded the third best Quaker distance in the triple jump. The senior’s 9.12 mark placed her 13th of 17 jumpers.

Cheyenne Wright ran the 200M in 29:36, which is the third fastest in GC history. The sophomore was 25th of 60 competitors.

Freshman Carmen Curtis sprinted the 60M in 8.66 and was 24th of 48 runners in a preliminary heat. Her time was also the fifth fastest of a Guilford woman. In the final, Curtis ran a 8.65.

Sommer Fanney posted two impressive times. A senior, she was fifth of 36 runners in the 800m after clocking a 2:34.52, the sixth fastest time in Quaker history. She also posted the seventh best mile time (5:42.83) on Saturday.

In the final event of the day, the Quakers’ 4x400M relay team posted the fourth best time (4:35.97) in Quaker history. The quartet of Chantell Cooper, Curtis, Wright and Fanney placed eighth of the 14 relay squads.

On the men’s side, Juwan Houston was 14th of 22 hurdlers in the 60M event. His time of 9.13 is the seventh best in program history.

Fellow sophomore Jeremiah Hedrick leaped 12.67 in the triple jump. His mark was ninth of 19 competitors and seventh best among all-time Quaker men.

The GC indoor track and field teams next compete on Feb. 2 at the Camel City Elite event. The meet will be at the JDL Fast Track in nearby Winston-Salem, N.C.
