Second Half Surge Falls Short For Pride Men At Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Greensboro College men’s basketball team fell to the Cougars of Averett University Saturday, 108-90.

Averett controlled most of the first half and established 22-12 lead early before the Pride went on a on a 6-2 run, aided by a pair of three-pointers from Darus Maddox, to pull within five points.

However, the Cougars were then able to establish their largest lead of the half at 48-30 with 5:27 showing on the clock before taking a 55-43 lead into the break.

After the intermission, Averett held a 17-point advantage before Greensboro came roaring back with a 23-6 run to tie the game at 66 with 12:04 on the clock. Joseph Gatling paced the run with 11 points, while Darus Maddox chipped in eight points. Demetrius Tilley and Keyford Langley combined for 4 points.

Following the run, the Pride took their first lead of the contest at 68-66, following a pair of free throws from Gatling.

Greensboro was then able to hold the lead for the next six minutes before Averett closed out the game on a 29-11 lead to secure the victory.

“Despite having a really slow start to the game in the first half, I am really proud of how our guys responded in the second half,” Head Coach Bryan Galuski said. “We put ourselves into a position to win the game with about six minutes remaining, but we just imploded emotionally.

“I am really disappointed how we let our emotions take over our concentration and focus. At this point of the season, I am having a difficult time connecting with the guys and getting the execute when needed. We have a quick turnaround as we hit the road again tomorrow for another tough road game against Pfeiffer.”

Maddox tallied a game-high 31 points and record four rebounds, while Gatling finished with 23 points. Langley had nine points and three assists. Javen Garrison also had three assist on the day.
