GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men’s basketball team shot 62 percent from the field Wednesday to top the Panthers of Ferrum College in USA South Athletic Conference play, 99-88.

The two teams traded buckets over the first seven minutes of play before the Panthers established a 13-9 lead following a 7-0 run.

However, Greensboro answered the Ferrum run with a 9-0 run of their own to pull in front by five points. Daron Gipson sparked the run with a deep three-pointer before Darus Maddox laid a ball off the left side of the glass for his eighth point of the day. Following Maddox’s layup, Justin Minnis capped off the run with a three-pointer of his own.

Over the final 12 minutes of the half, Greensboro and Ferrum traded the lead four times before the Pride went into the break holding a 46-43 advantage.

Greensboro then opened the second half on an 8-1 run to extend their lead to 10 points but Ferrum battled back to within 54-51 with 16:18 to play.

For the next seven minutes, Greensboro was able to hold their advantage before their defense began to stifle the Panthers offense, allowing them to extend their lead to 88-66 on an 11-2 run.

After a pair of free throws by Corey Burnette, Maddox tallied steals and layups on back-to-back possessions before Javen Garrison tallied his lone basket of the evening on a put-back layup.

With Greensboro holding on to the 15-point advantage, Ferrum battled back once again to within five points with 5:16 remaining but Greensboro went on another run to gain a 88-76 advantage with 3:58 showing on the clock.

Over the final three minutes, Ferrum would get no closer than eight points as Gipson connected four-of-five attempts from the free-throw line to seal the win.

“We felt good coming into today, especially after the big comeback on Sunday,” Head Coach Bryan Galuski said. “I was really proud of the way that our guys shot the ball tonight, but we have to do a much better job of stopping the ball and closing games out.

“Overall, I am really proud of my kids today as they really stepped up when they need to.”

Maddox finished with a game-high 29 points and dished out four assists, while Johnson added 19 points and six rebounds. Minnis (13), Gipson (12) and Gatling (10) also scored in double figures.

The Greensboro defense forced 18 Panthers turnovers and turned them into 31 points.

The Pride men will return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when they host the Lions of Piedmont College. For more information on Greensboro College men’s basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
