College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 80, Hampden-Sydney 64

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Marcus Curry (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford (Bridgewater)) had a game-high 16 points and seven assists in Guilford College’s 80-64 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over Hampden-Sydney College Saturday.

The victory extended Guilford’s (12-8, 8-3 ODAC) winning streak to a season-high five games and marked the Quakers’ seventh win in eight outings. Hampden-Sydney slumped to 5-15 (2-9 ODAC) with its 10th loss in 11 games.

The Tigers knocked down their first four shots and had an early four-point lead, but they cooled a bit as Guilford heated up from long range. The Quakers made 7-of-11 first-half three-pointers and shot 54.8 percent overall, which overcame Hampden-Sydney’s 60-percent field-goal shooting. Carson Long (Pilot Mountain, N.C./East Surry) knocked in three triples in the opening frame and shared team-high scoring honors (9 points) with Jarrod Rogers (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) after 20 minutes. Kevin Quinn (Durham, N.C./Virginia Episcopal) made four-of-five three-pointers and led all students at the break with 12 points.

Hampden-Sydney went cold in the second half, connecting on 7-of-30 shots (23.3%) and just 2-of 18 (11.1%) threes. Curry used an array of drives to the baskets to tally 10 second-half points and Alston Thompson’s (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) four-for-five shooting from midrange added up eight of his 12 points on the night. The Tigers never threatened and both teams cleared their benches for the game’s final 2:30.

Long finished with 13 points and Will Leckonby (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) chipped in 11 points off the bench for Guilford, which shot 51.8% from the field. Long, Curry and Kyler Gregory (Yadkinville, N.C./Starmount) each had five boards as the Quakers outrebounded the Tigers, 36-28.

Hampden-Sydney’s Quinn shared game-high scoring honors with 16 points and was the lone Tiger in double-figure scoring. Guilherme Guimares had nine points and five rebounds off the bench. The Tigers turned the ball over 15 times, which led to 25 Quakers’ points.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers head to league-rival Randolph-Macon College Saturday (2/3) for a 2:00 p.m. game.
