HIGH POINT, N.C. — The High Point University used a big second half to earn a 67-56 win over Campbell Saturday night (Feb. 3) in front of a capacity crowd at the Millis Center.
Chris Clemons made a 3-pointer to give Campbell (12-12, 6-6 Big South) a 34-32 lead with 14:34 to go, but the Panthers (11-12, 6-6) went on a 21-5 run over the next 6:18, including 12 points from sophomore Jahaad Proctor, to break open the game. The closest the Camels came after the run was eight with 52 seconds left.
The Panthers held the Camels to 36.6 shooting, while shooting 41.7 percent themselves, including 53.6 percent (15-28) in the second half. High Point’s bench outscored Campbell’s 21-8.
“It was a total team effort tonight,” HPU head coach Scott Cherry said. “Our bench was huge for us when Jahaad (Proctor), Andre (Fox) and Brandonn (Kamga) all had foul trouble in the first half. All four guys that came off the bench played big for us and even gave us a lead at the half. We then we carried that momentum in to the second half. We had great defensive intensity, created turnovers and got out in transition and converted, which is when we are at our best.”
Proctor ended up with 20 points, all in the second half, while junior Andre Fox recorded the first double-double of his career with 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Jamal Wright added seven points, three assists and two steals off the bench, while his classmate Luke Vargo added a pair of 3-pointers.
Both teams struggled in the first half, with High Point shooting 31.3 percent (10-32) with Campbell at 30.0 percent (6-20). Campbell had a 22-15 lead with 3:29 left, but the Panthers scored the last nine points, including a layup by Wright at the buzzer, to take a 24-22 halftime lead.
Clemons scored a game-high 26 points to lead Campbell.
Next up, the Panthers travel to Radford, Va., on Wednesday (Feb. 7) to take on the Highlanders at 7 p.m.
