DANVILLE, Va.-Katie Lewis scored a game-high 21 points as the Greensboro College women’s basketball team topped the Cougars of Averett University Saturday, 68-62.

The Pride and the Cougars traded the lead back and forth for the first nine minutes of the opening period before Rasheika Gregory and Shaniah Hayes combined for five points to give Greensboro a 17-12 edge heading into the second period.

Averett then used a 6-0 run over the first three minutes of the period to regain the lead at 18-17, but Greensboro used a 14-4 run over the final 7:23 of the half to take a 31-22 lead into the break. Lewis led the way for the Pride during the run, while Sabria Joseph added four points. A’Liyah Wood and Laprecious England combined for five points.

After the Cougars scored the first bucket of the third period, Greensboro mounted a 12-3 run that lasted three minutes to establish their largest lead of the contest at 43-27. This time it was England leading the way with five points.

During the run, Greensboro went three-of-five from the field, while going a perfect two-for-two from long range.

Greensboro was then able to maintain their double-digit lead for the next seven minutes before the Cougars started to make a run at the Pride.

With Greensboro leading 56-47 with 5:46 to play in the game, Averett used a 10-0 to gain their first lead since the first period at 57-56 with just over three minutes left.

However, Greensboro quickly regained the lead with a Gregory layup before going eight-of-10 from the free-throw line over the final 1:30 to secure the win.

“Today was a great road win for our team,” Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. “I really think we played the best game that we have had in a while.

“Everyone that played gave us a tremendous amount of effort on the court, but we still have four games left on the season. We still need to take things one game at a time, starting with tomorrow.”

England joined Lewis in double figures with 13 points, while also dishing out six assists. Woods finished with a team-high seven rebounds to go along with eight points.

The Pride women will return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when they host Meredith College for senior day. For more information on Greensboro College women’s basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
