GREENSBORO, N.C.-The Greensboro College men’s basketball team defeated the Tornados of Brevard College Sunday, 93-83.

Brevard opened the contest on a 12-6 run, but the Pride immediately started a 24-8 run of their own to take a 30-20 lead. At the start of the run, both Darus Maddox and Cornelius Johnson recorded back-to-back baskets. Maddox ended the run with a three-point basket and 11 points.

As time began to expire in the first half, the Tornados pulled within five points and Greensboro went into halftime with a 46-41 lead.

Three minutes into the second half, the Pride offense caught fire. Johnson made a statement with a slam-dunk to start up a 23-9 run for Greensboro. Johnson racked up eight points during the run while Joseph Gatling knocked down two baskets from three-point land. Carmoni Marks, Corey Burnette, Keyford Langley and Maddox worked together to put up the remaining nine points to extend the Pride’s lead to 73-59 with under 10 minutes left in the game.

Brevard battled during the remaining 10 minutes, but they were unable to stop Greensboro’s offense and dropped the contest.

“Anytime you get beat and then turn around and win the next one, that’s a positive,” Head Coach Bryan Galuski said. “We talk about making our teammates better and we haven’t done that a lot this year.

“I think today was indicative of just sharing the basketball and making each other better.”

Johnson completed the game with a career-high 27 points and four steals, while Maddox finished with 20 points. Also finishing in double figures scoring were Gatling (16) and Daron Gipson (11).

Greensboro will return to Hanes Gymnasium Wednesday for a USA South Athletic Conference matchup against the Cougars of Averett University at 7:30 p.m. For more information on Greensboro College men’s basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
