College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 79, Emory & Henry 64

EMORY, Va. – Marcus Curry scored a game-high 23 points in visiting Guilford College’s 79-64 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over Emory & Henry College Wednesday night. The win avenged the Wasps’ 95-77 victory over the Quakers (13-9, 9-4 ODAC) in Greensboro January 3 and marked Guilford’s sixth victory in seven outings.

Emory & Henry (18-4, 10-3 ODAC) entered the game ranked third in the first NCAA Division III South Region Poll released earlier in the day.

Curry and Carson Long both scored 12 first-half points as the Quakers took a 36-33 halftime lead. A John Shelor three-pointer gave the hosts a six-point lead midway through the half, but the Quakers reeled off 13 of the game’s next 16 points. Curry’s three capped the spurt, which ultimately put Guilford in front for good.

The Quakers opened the second half with a 10-3 flurry for a short-lived 10-point lead. Emory & Henry twice battled back to within two points, but Curry and Will Leckonby drained back-to-back three-pointers to trigger a 13-2 spurt that put the game away.

Long finished with 14 points, a game-high nine rebounds, three blocks and four steals. Joah Logan added 12 points and Leckonby finished with nine. Point guard Jarrod Rogers had seven points, a game-high 10 assists, and no turnovers in 40 minutes. The Quakers outscored the Wasps in the paint, 34-20, and converted 16 Emory & Henry turnovers into 18 points.

Shelor’s 20 points paced the Wasps, who lost for the third straight game. Chase Branscomb added 18 points and eight rebounds and Suggs finished with 10 points. The trio combined for 48 of Emory & Henry’s 64 points.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers return home to host league-rival Virginia Wesleyan University Saturday (2/10) at 2:00 p.m. on Guilford’s Alumni Day.
