College Baseball Final: Greensboro 17. Guilford 9

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Hunter Curtis went 5-6 at the plate and scored four times as the Greensboro College baseball team defeated Guilford College, 17-9, at McBane Field on Friday.

The contest was the season-opener for both clubs. The teams combined for 31 hits in the contest, with Greensboro collecting 16.

The Pride scored in five different innings. The visitors tacked on five runs in the second frame and scored seven times in their fourth at-bat. The Quakers plated five runs in the fifth inning.

Brett Shapcott paced Guilford batters after going 4-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Teammate Trevor Denton went 3-5 with a double, one run and one run batted in. Rocco Wilcox notched the game’s lone triple.

Mitchell Stumpo started for the home team. He pitched three innings and allowed six earned runs and earned the loss.

Greensboro sent three hurlers to the mound. Freshman Tyler Garam tossed the final 3 1/3 innings and picked up the victory. He threw four strikeouts against one walk.

Scotty McGuire went 3-5 for The Pride. Teammates Jimmy Short and Tyler Price both recorded two hits in the game.

Saturday and Sunday’s games between Guilford and Greensboro were postponed due to expected rain. The Quakers host Averett on Wednesday (2/14) at 2:30 p.m.
